Why Glass: Our Commitment to Tradition & The Environment

Since 1976, Hanover Dairies has been committed to the tradition of delivering milk in glass bottles. It’s what’s made us the UK’s trusted deliverer of all things dairy, juice, and more over the years, but we always get asked why we’ve stayed so rooted in the tradition of glass bottles for five decades.

To understand why we’ve kept to glass milk bottle delivery, it’s important to go back to the start before we dive into the actual benefits of glass bottles, both for recipients and the environment.

The History of Glass Bottle Milk Delivery

As urban populations grew throughout Great Britain during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the demand for fresh dairy products increased significantly. Thanks to the development of railway networks connecting countryside farms to cities and towns, it became much easier to provide and deliver milk.

Fun fact: before milk bottles were first used in 1880, and before that, milkmen would travel on their rounds with churns, dipping a measure in and filling customers jugs.

By the 1960s, the convenience of fresh milk delivered right to your doorstep was part of the British everyday morning routine, with millions of homes up and down the country receiving milk daily. Glass bottles created a closed-loop system with empties being collected and reused. While the popularity died down in the mid 2000s, interest in local milk delivery remains strong for many households.

What Are The Environmental Impacts of Glass Bottle Milk

The key advantage of glass bottles for fresh milk delivery is simple: they can be used again and again. Where cartons and plastic milk bottles are single-use, glass bottles are collected by the milkman, washed and sterilised, and refilled up to 30 times before they’re recycled.

This tends to be done using high-speed industrial bottle washers, which combine powerful mechanical jetting with chemical detergents and high temperatures (70°C to 80°C) to completely clean the inside ready for refilling.

A single glass bottle can be part of dozens of delivery cycles within its lifetime, meaning that new packaging materials aren’t needed. Plus, with glass being made from natural materials, it can be recycled over and over without degradation of quality, making it one of the most sustainable packaging options available.

Glass Bottles vs Cartons: The Environmental Impact

Plastic cartons have become much more recyclable over the years, with centres all over the world being able to break down and repurpose the materials used. In fact, data from WRAP found that plastic milk cartons like Hanover Dairies use have a recycling rate of 80% in the UK alone.

While plastic has improved in eco-friendliness, glass bottles offer several environmental advantages making them the preferred material for recycling:

  • They’re reusable rather than disposable, with bottles being collected and reused multiple times.
  • Glass offers infinite recyclability without degrading in quality.
  • Fewer new containers need to be manufactured, reducing packaging waste.
  • Lower resource consumption over time with repeated reuse helps spread the environmental cost of production across many delivery cycles.
  • Customers simply leaving empty bottles out for collection rather than disposing of them results in less household waste.

By choosing milk delivered in returnable glass bottles, customers help support a circular system that prioritises reuse before recycling.

Benefits of Milk Delivery For Homes & Offices

Fresh milk delivery offers you both the delicious milk that you know and love, but also helps to cut down your carbon footprint in areas beyond what you might expect. Getting it delivered to your door means that you can immediately cut out trips to the supermarket when you run out, saving you from having to jump in the car and use valuable fuel.

It also means that you’re reducing the amount of packaging waste you’re directly responsible for, while having the convenience of regularly scheduled deliveries and the extra knowledge you’re supporting local businesses and traditions. That reliability of having essentials arrive at your home can be a comfort for many.

It’s not just family homes that benefit from milk deliveries, but workplaces and businesses too. Whether it’s a small office, a large workplace, or even hospitality venues, fresh milk means that no one’s tea or coffee is without a splash of milk, and you can stay fully stocked without staff needing to make additional shopping trips.

Plus, if you’re an employer, switching to reusable glass bottles is a simple but meaningful step to showing your workforce that you’re looking after them.
